Just yesterday, the first official trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix was released. Today it was announced that 20th Century Fox is changing the release dates for both Dark Phoenix and the long-in-development Gambit film.
Dark Phoenix was first given a release date of November 2, 2018 but was changed to February 14, 2019. That is changing yet again, giving it a summer release on June 7, 2019. That is the release date Gambit was supposed to have, which is now being moved back more than a year to March 2020.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix follows after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse and tells the story of how Jean Grey’s powers develop, eventually corrupting her and turning her into Dark Phoenix. The official synopsis reads, “Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all the people living in the world.”
A Gambit film starring Channing Tatum has been in various stages of development for years. Various directors have been attached over the years, and least one script was written, but none of these have panned out. Currently, there is no director attached to direct a Gambit film.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be released June 7, 2019.
