With Solo now out in theaters, many fans are looking forward to the next Star Wars film – the as-yet untitled Episode IX. Filming has not yet started, but some recent casting news from a galaxy far, far away has many excited to see a familiar face as well as a new one.
It was announced Monday that actor Billy Dee Williams will be returning to his role of Lando Calrissian for the film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, rumors began circulating that he might make an appearance in the movie once he bowed out of a sci-fi convention, citing a filming conflict. The actor also stated that he was on a new fitness regimen. While the last time Williams appeared in person as Calrissian with Return of the Jedi, over the years he has lent his voice to the role in various Star Wars video games and television series.
We will no doubt find out what the most stylish man in the galaxy has been up to since we last saw him in Episode VI. With the absence of General Leia, is it possible that he might step into a leadership role in the Resistance? Or will it simple be a few quick moments with the character?
Several days ago, Variety stated that actress Keri Russell is in talks for a role in Episode IX. There is almost nothing known about the role, except that it calls for “action-heavy fight scenes.” She has previously appeared projects by director J.J. Abrams, including Felicity and Mission Impossible: III. Given the wide range of acting her past projects have shown, this Star Wars role could be just about anything. Speculation in the fan community has covered everything from a replacement for Leia in the Resistance, a member of the First Order, an unaffiliated spy/assassin, and everything in-between.
Episode IX will be in theaters December 20, 2019.
What roles to you think Williams and Russell will play in the film? Are you excited about this casting news?
