PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
AMELIA SKY #2: Anti-Aliasing Awakening Pt. 2

Writing:

Though it has been some time since I read and reviewed issue one, writer Jermaine M. Boyd does a terrific job at pulling me right back into the world of Amelia Sky. Issue two progresses at a pace ideal for advancing the narrative without being overwhelming and certainly meets, if not exceeds, expectations. Amidst the chaotic surroundings, Jermaine takes time to further flesh out the characters by delving into Eleanor’s (recent) past. On top of surviving and seeking answers, the characters within have suffered loss. It’s in Eleanor’s flashback, and subsequent present-time discovery (no spoilers here, grab you a copy!), where readers can get a little tugging of the heartstrings. There’s loss, heartache, second-guessing decisions made in the past, but it’s the primal urge to survive and keep moving forward that drives the characters in AMELIA SKY. We even get a taste of something powerful, dare I say beautiful, that’s manifesting within young Amelia. The issue ends on an exciting note giving even more reason to have you wanting more.

Art:

Illustrator Gwynn Tavares beautifully captures the cold, dark environment of this post-apocalyptic world. From the extreme weather conditions to the ferocity of the threatening Shriekers, creating intense imagery is right up this artist’s alley. Tavares also adds another layer of emotion as she depicts Boyd’s flashback scene just following “the event” that changed the world. It’s a touching backstory which Gwynn recognizes and achieves the desired empathy from this reviewer.  Whereas Boyd has me hooked with his storytelling, Tavares has me caring for the characters. Your magnificent work truly caught my eye, Gwynn. I could easily go on.

Letterer Kuen Tang rounds out the creative team nicely. Very conscientious as to not detract from Gwynn’s artwork, The Mighty Kuen delivers sharp dialogue, fun and intelligent sfx, and smart placement. Tang has really given voices to these characters and delivers impressive lettering throughout.

PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:

The harsh depiction of survivalism in a post-apocalyptic world is captured on many levels. This dystopian landscape isn’t painted as “The world went to shit, so here’s how people live now.” There is an ever-present threat looming, atop a deafening silence in the world, coupled with a young child confused, frightened, and losing hope. But underlying it all is hope. Hope in the innocent girl who could save the world.

Because in this world, there are no heroes…only heroines.
