Sebastian Girner is one of those writers who seems to know the source material of what he is tasked with crafting in comics form. He immediately introduces readers to a world of magic and adventure, serving up a first helping of tantalizing characters with an interesting story premise to reel people in.
Galaad’s art doesn’t need much fanfare. It more than speaks for itself with how it may seem rather simple, but it’s not. It’s complex and it just adds more line to reeling in readers alongside Girner’s script for the first issue. Whatever it is Galaad has tapped into with art, it more than works and is sure to only grow the world of Scales and Scoundrels.
Jeff Powell’s lettering brings personality to the main character of Luvander with his lettering. She is sassy, bold, spoiling for treasure and quests and this can be seen through the lettering/dialogue. Jeff’s letters gives dimensional growth to even background characters too; they aren’t just a window dressing, they still matter even for the few pages/panels that they show up.
PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:
For readers who enjoy dragons, treasure, adventures and magic, there is all that to be found within the pages of Scales and Scoundrels #1. It is reminiscent of classic sword and sorcery books and comics from several decades ago, but there is no copying or homage giving in this series. Readers will find themselves pushed into a new world of adventures just waiting to be found, and will come back for more and to see what happens next to Luvander.
