PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
XERXES: THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF DARIUS
AND THE RISE OF ALEXANDER #3

Writing:

Frank gives a different sort of story for readers. Here is a deep introspection about Xerxes himself. Not only that, but a Xerxes is presented who seems a bit more human as it were. More the man he was in the time of his father Darius. What’s more, Frank weaves into the comic a varied re-telling of a story from the Bible. One that is part of historical record. And its retelling will surprise fans of both Frank’s work and the 300 world.

Art:

For issue #3, the artwork is different. There is some action, but not what Frank Miller fans are used to. Instead, there is glorious multi-page layouts. Rich and vibrant with art. The people are drawn in a more energetic fashion, alive with the energy of life and not of death. And mighty Xerxes himself is given many close-up panels that give a clear look at his regal countenance.

Alex’s colors are less focused on war this time. More focus is given on colors that reflect life and joy. Bright yellows and silvers, greens and others that speak of the joy of existence. On pages 40 and 41, even colors of bright rockets and celebration fireworks. A glorious collection of bright and happy coloring.

PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:

Issue #3 will surprise people. Maybe even shock them. But it is Frank focusing on a part of Xerxes’ life that was not geared solely towards war. Instead, it draws attention to the period where his focus was on the kingdom, and on finding himself love. And in doing so, bringing about one of the books of the Bible to life.
