[Book Review] ‘The Golden Gate’ by Robert Buettner

The Golden Gate by Robert Buettner

“When the world’s richest man is the victim of a car bomb and literally blown off the Golden Gate Bridge the attack is attributed to terrorists and the world moves on. But some still wonder. Was Manuel Colibri targeted because, as Silicon Valley rumor has it, he was about to make the dream that people alive today can live to be one thousand come true?

Two people are pursuing the truth. Tech journalist Kate Boyle and recovering Iraq war veteran Ben Shepard race through the Bay Area chasing the only clues the reclusive Colibri left behind. They discover not only each other but a cosmic secret that can change human history—and may cost them their lives.”

A nosy reporter, a handsome government agent, rich socialites, and an open-and-shut murder case…. all the elements of a classic who-done-it murder mystery. Only this isn’t quite as cut and dry as it would appear (are they ever?).

Set in 2019 San Francisco, this science-fiction murder mystery meanders down paths that seem totally irrelevant to the big picture, until the end. Despite the apparent wandering, this page-turning novel had me entranced from cover to cover.

Robert Buettner’s descriptions of San Francisco – the traffic and the people – bring memories back to everyone that has been there.  You get just enough character building to feel for them, without having to learn about every childhoold trauma.  It’s a great mix that makes it an easy and enjoyable read.

The Golden Gate by Robert Buettner is a well-written entertaining piece tp which I give four stars out of five.
