NYCC 2017: Rise Up with the New ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ Trailer

Earlier this year at SDCC, we got our first look at Pacific Rim: Uprising with a teaser trailer for the sequel to the 2013 hit. Today during a panel at NYCC, fans got to see the first full trailer for the movie. In addition to this, we now have a release date – March 23, 2018.

It looks like the Jaeger program has gotten quite an upgrade since we last saw it. No longer a few deciding to take a stand and defend the planet from the invading kaiju, the manned rigs have been redesigned in the intervening years and become a global defense force. Talking about the new Jaegers, director Stephen S. DeKnight said, “Since it’s been 10 years, they’ve had a chance to redesign the Jaegers from the ground up…It’s not longer the Russian Jager or the Australian Jaeger. It’s all of humanity working together. Leading the force is Gypsy Avenger.”

The New Jaegers

Titan Redeemer

For the movie there are six new Jaegers – Gypsy Avenger, Bracer Pheonix, Saber Athena, Titan Redeemer, Guardian Bravo, and “little guy” referred to as “Scrapper”. Gypsy Avenger is equipped with a gravity swing, which allows it to send buildings, cars, and much more flying towards to the Kaiju. Bracer Pheonix utilizes three pilots, and the third pilot mans an enormous pair of guns called vortex cannons. Saber Athena is the most technologically advanced of the bunch, as well as being experimental. In addition to being fast, it wields a pair of plasma swords. Titan Redeemer utilizes a “ball of death” that comes out of its arm. Guardian Bravo is given a graphine arc whip. Scrapper is a homemade Jaeger made out of old parts.

NYCC Panel

Actor John Boyega plays Jake Penecost, the son of Pacific Rim’s Stacker Pentecost, and he commented that one of the reasons he enjoyed the first film so much was because of Idris Elba‘s character. He is definitely excited to play Elba’s character’s son. “It was definitely something I hadn’t imagined. I saw myself in a Jaeger suit and I was like ‘Oh, crap! This is what you brought me in for!'” He also commented on making the sequel its own thing and not necessarily trying to replicate the original. “The vision of this movie was not to repeat what GDT did but to build upon and expand this universe. “Going in, I had the same creative passion as Steve…we went through the robots and the specific Jaeger abilities.”

DeKnight further elaborated: “Guillermo set the table. We wanted to make sure we honored what he created and also expanded the universe. This is hopefully the first step in a bigger Pacific Rim franchise that we really wanted to explore the universe and look at the first movie and expand on it. There are references to the first movie and what happened in the first movie. As our people try to understand why the Kaiju attack, why the aliens sent the kaiju… We really wanted to honor the first movie and go forward and moving 10 years in the future gave us the chance to do that.”

Who Is Returning?

Rinko Kikuchi will return as Mako Mori, though her role has now changed. Once a Jaeger pilot, she has now taken it upon herself to train the new generation. Charlie Day and Burn Gorman also reprise their roles as Newt Geiszler and Herman Gottlieb, respectively. Gorman talked about being excited to return to the role and being the top ranking member of the Pan Pacific Defense Corp: “He’s got access to a lot more funding and I think it’s okay to say that Newt and Herman, it’s not that they don’t work together anymore it’s that Newt is working in the private sector no and I’m not and I felt that he has got all these resources and Steven has this great vision for what happens and I was just really excited to be back in that sandbox. When Steven offers you the opportunity to come back and reprise Herman Gottlieb, you don’t say no.”

The official synopsis of Uprising is as follows: Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, reunites with Mako Mori to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against a new Kaiju threat.

Pacific Rim: Uprising will be released March 23, 2018.
