BLOOD & DUST: GLENNY FAMILY VALUES #1

Written by Michael R. Martin
Art by Tone Rodriguez
Colors by Raymund Lee
Letters by Kel Nuttal

Momma is off her chain, out of her mind and starving. Free for the first time in decades and hell bent on making up for lost time, Ruth Glenny is headed straight for the town of Boggy Depot to feed on its inhabitants. The only one who can stop her…Judd Glenny, Ruth’s grandpa and the one who made her in the first place…and who’s regretted it every night since.

Glenny Family Values continues the story of Judd Glenny and his vampire family. Ride along with Eddie Jacobs and listen to Judd tell the tale of how the Glenny Family came to be and the hellish night Judd died and was reborn. All while racing to stop Ruth from killing…everyone.

Created by Michael R. Martin & Adam Orndorf, Glenny Family Values is the second volume of the Blood & Dust saga that began with the critically acclaimed The Life & Undeath of Judd Glenny. Formerly published by Action Lab: Danger Zone, the book is now being self-published again by NightShade Comics and launches on Kickstarter October 1st!

PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
BLOOD & DUST: GLENNY FAMILY VALUES #1

Writing:

Writer Michael R Martin returns in a big way with the next chapter in the Blood & Dust saga. A powerful and gripping tale come to life through the rest of his creative team. Martin’s use of flashbacks really shape the first issue nicely. Done so with a steady progression parallel to present day. What I enjoy most about Martin’s story is that it’s chock full of emotion. There’s suspense, excitement, even moments where I felt compassion. And when the ending hits you, wow! How could one not want to read more? This looks to be a terrific title!

Art:

Artist Tone Rodriguez provides tremendous definition for the characters in Glenny Family Values. The weathered and stern look to Judd greatly define the lead vampire and the pain he’s experienced in his life. The scenery isn’t overdone and what’s presented is nicely detailed. That final page though impressed the heck out of me as it was visually stunning.

Raymund Lee’s colors really grab you! They beautifully set the tone and mood throughout the entire issue. From the cold nights on the Oklahoman range to the candlelit ambience of the rundown shack, Lee has incredible range in producing both cool and warm tones. And most of the colors are softer and subdued to embrace each panel’s feel, but when the intensity kicks up, so does Raymund’s work and it’s a sweet explosion of fiery hues.

Letterer Kel Nuttall does an excellent job with his contributions to this issue. His smart font choices add to the suspense as well as defining each character through his lettering. Great usage of effects in the action scenes too. Kel certainly puts his experience between the covers and it looks amazing!

PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:

You think your family has issues? This is a family story like no other and, frankly, I’d want it no other way. BLOOD & DUST: GLENNY FAMILY VALUES #1 is a well-rounded comic anyone can enjoy and a vampire tale with heart (in a peculiar way). From an intriguing storyline to its defining illustrations, this next arc in the Blood & Dust series is solid on all levels. Do you need to know about, or have read, the first run (Blood & Dust: The Life and Undeath of Judd Glenny)? Not at all, although I highly recommend it. Even without knowing the amount of the tiers for the upcoming Kickstarter, I feel confident in stating that anyone who backs/supports the campaign will definitely get their money’s worth and then some.
