In the last week, there has been a lot of news in the Star Wars universe, and we’re here to give you all the details!
First off, Lucasfilm announced in a statement last Tuesday they and director Colin Trevorrow had agreed to part ways in regards to him directing Star Wars: Episode IX after deciding that each party had a different vision for the project.
“Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”
After this announcement, the speculation began as to who would replace him, similar to when Ron Howard replaced Han Solo film directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. We had to wait a week, but it was announced today and The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams will now both be directing and co-writing the film with Chris Terrio. Lucasfilm issued the following statement:
“J.J. Abrams, who launched a new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, is returning to complete the sequel trilogy as writer and director of Star Wars: Episode IX. Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio. Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.
“With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy,” said Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.”
Following the announcement about Abrams, just a few hours later the Star Wars twitter account announced that Episode IX’s release date has been pushed back seven months from May 24, 2019 to December 20, 2019.

The next Star Wars movie to be released is Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which we will see in just a few short months on December 15. At a recent press event in Japan promoting the film, director Rian Johnson teased fans with a cameo for viewers to look out for. He shared that actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt will voice an alien character in one scene.
