In a surprising announcement, it was learned Tuesday that directors of the Star Wars Han Solo film Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were released from the project. The movie has been shooting in London since February, with several weeks still remaining and reshoots scheduled for later this summer.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement, “Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways.”
“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,” Lord and Miller also said in a statement.
There has been much speculation about the firing, and many of the rumors about the reasoning are with the tone Lord and Miller seemed to setting. With their background of comedic films such and 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, the directors seemed to be taking Han Solo in a similar direction, rather than the sarcastic and selfish characterization that we are used to with the smuggler. Kennedy allegedly wanted to bring in “fixers” to put the film in the right direction, but Lord and Miller were not open to this idea.
In the intermittent days, there were many guesses about who would replace Lord and Miller, but we now have an answer to that question. The Hollywood Reporter announced this morning that Ron Howard would be stepping in to direct. It is also reported that filming will resume on July 10. “At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began 40 years ago,” said Kathleen Kennedy in a statement. “With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew and the absolute commitment to make a great movie.”
The untitled Han Solo film stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, and also features Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, and Thandie Newton. It is scheduled to be released May 25, 2018.
