HBO Confirms: ‘Game of Thrones’ to End After Season Eight

Finally, the answer people have been waiting for but may not want to hear. HBO has confirmed that their hit series Game of Thrones will be coming to an end after its eighth season in 2018.

In an interview with EW.com, newly-named president of programming for HBO, Casey Bloys, answered as to whether he will side with the showrunners’ (Dan Weiss & David Benioff) request at ending the beloved series after eight seasons. The exec went on record as being on board,

Yes, they have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do,” Bloys said at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Beverly Hills on Saturday. “Believe me, as the new [programming executive] coming in, if I could get them to do more. I would take 10 more seasons. But we take their lead on what they think they can do the best version of the show.”

At one point, it had been revealed that season eight would likely only consist of six episodes, much to the chagrin of fans (though next season is only slated for seven episodes). Bloys, however, has stated that the number of episodes has not yet been confirmed. And with the announcement of the eighth being the final season, they may just need to add a few episodes to really tie up the series into one big finale.

EW went one step further in inquiring about the possibility of a spinoff series, in an effort to keep its massive fanbase for the network.

We’ve talked about it,” Bloys replied. “It’s something I’m not opposed to, but of course it has to make sense creatively. I’m not sure that [Benioff and Weiss] could really wrap their heads around it when they’re just about to start production [on season 7]. It’s a pretty intense production, they’re about to start production soon. I’m open to it. The guys weren’t opposed to it, but there’s no concrete plans for it at this point.”

The seventh season is about to go into production with numerous winter locales for the winter that is coming.
