Thor: Ragnarok will not be released for almost a year-and-a-half from now, but the cast for the third Thor film is extensive and talented. One of the actors who was recently announced as joining the Marvel film is Jeff Goldblum. He will be tasked with playing the Grandmaster, one of the ageless Elders of the Universe.
The highly skilled game-player with the ability of resurrection and traveling through space and time, once possessed an Infinity Gem (the Mind Gem) but lost it to Thanos in a failed attempt to kill Galactus along with the other Elders. That was in the comics. How true the script is to that is uncertain. The fact he has possessed an Infinity Gem does fall in line with the overall story arc throughout the Marvel films: Thanos seeking to gain all of the Gems for the Infinity Gauntlet in order to rule the universe. Goldblum does give us some insight into the characteristics of this being.
“He’s a hedonist, a pleasure-seeker, an enjoyer of life and tastes and smells. I thought, ‘I can do that, I’ll bet!’ I’m working on my part every day. I’m a sponge, researching.”
Jeff has also been given the green light take ownership of the Grandmaster character. “[Taika Waititi] is encouraging me to improvise and make it my own, and that’s what I’m trying to do. I hope he doesn’t throw me out on the first day!”
Goldblum stated he will likely be shooing the Thor sequel for 3-4 weeks in Brisbane, Australia. “Not only Chris Hemsworth, Cate Blanchett, Anthony Hopkins… jeez, that’s gonna be fun. I’ve never been to Australia except to do these little publicity things.”
Goldblum is also excited to be working with director Waititi, praising the New Zealand director for his work on the vampire mockumentary “What We Do In The Shadows.” He’s eager to work with his new boss, too. “I love Taika Waititi.”
Goldblum isn’t the only one new to the MCU in this film. Joining him are Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett (Aviator) as Hela, the villain of the film and the Goddess of Death (as appointed by Odin). Karl Urban (Star Trek) will take on the role of Skurge (“The Executioner”), a regular foe of Thor that wields a magical double-bladed battle axe. Tessa Thompson (Creed) will be portraying Valkyrie, leader of the Valkyrior, a group of female warriors originally designated by Odin to bring the souls of slain heroes to Valhalla. Valkyrie can perceive the approaching of death, in the form of a “deathglow” surrounding a person’s body.
“With the additions of Cate, Jeff, Tessa, Karl and Mark [Ruffalo] to the cast, we have the makings of [Thor’s] most dangerous and heroic adventure yet,” assures producer Kevin Feige.
Thor: Ragnarok is currently in pre-production and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 3rd, 2017.
