ComiXology Announces New Netflix-Style Service for Its Digital Comic Book Library

Digital comic distributor comiXology announced that they are rolling out a program for reading comic books just as you would watch movies on Netflix. This new service is comparable to Netflix in that users can have access to thousands of digital comics for a low monthly fee. ComiXology Unlimited is available for $5.99 a month and you can cancel anytime. Plus, when signing up, you will get a FREE 30-day trial!

The new comiXology Unlimited will offer unlimited reading of select titles of comiXology’s vast library of comics, graphic novels, and manga. Currently, the service features thousands of titles from indie publishers Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics, IDW Publishing and others. At this present time, there are no Marvel or DC Comics titles included in the service.

It sounds silly but our mission is to make everyone on the planet a comics fan. That’s really hard to do by just throwing them into the middle of 100,000 comic books,” comiXology CEO David Steinberger told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s a lot easier if people have a very low risk opportunity to discover comics for themselves and just really take their time with the catalog.”

ComiXology Unlimited will be available on the existing comiXology mobile app; a new tab was added for the service this morning. The comiXology Unlimited library will change over time, just as Netflix phases movies in and out, with some titles leaving and new titles joining.

This program takes advantage of comiXology: download wherever you want, read offline, all the stuff you love about it,” Steinberger says. “I hope that people who love comics take this as a tool to introduce their friends to specific content, and then because this is the inexpensive way to get to that content, help them explore even more.”
