DC Comics Upcoming “Rebirth” Details Revealed!

At the ComicsPRO retailer meeting in Portland, OR today, DC Comics finally revealed their plans for the teased upcoming “DC Rebirth.” Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics, Geoff Johns, was on hand to announce just what he, Jim Lee (Co-Publisher, writer, artist), and Dan DiDio (Senior VP/Executive Editor, Co-Publisher, writer) have been working on for months with their creative teams. Rebirth has been hinted through social media by the creative team and it has had fans speculating. All that can finally be put to rest.

DC Universe Rebirth #1 will kick off the event, or as Johns puts it, “an ongoing mission for us.” The special issue is being released on May 25th and is a massive 80-page standalone edition. The issue, which will be written by Geoff Johns, will feature art from Ethan Van Sciver, Phil Jimenez, Ivan Reis and Gary Frank.

Following this premiere event starter, the publisher will be releasing new Rebirth one-shots prior to delivering their new #1 issues. The premiere issues will feature 17 titles, which ship bi-weekly and 15 which ship monthly for a total of 32 titles (all of which are listed below).  30 of them will receive a new #1 issue, while Action Comics and Detective Comics will return to their original volume issue numbers, being #957 and #954 respectively. One of the great things about this “event,” is that all DC titles will now retail at $2.99.

Co-Publisher of DC Entertainment, Dan DiDio spoke on the upcoming relaunch,

At DC we believe in superheroes, and what makes them great. And, we also believe in the direct market and the core comics fan. ‘Rebirth’ is designed to bring back the best of DC’s past, embrace the stories we currently love and move the entire epic universe into the future. We are returning to the essence of the DCU. With ‘Rebirth’ we are putting the highest priority on the direct market and we will continue to create and cultivate new opportunities for retailers to thrive and prosper, grow readers, fans and customers.”

CCO Johns added, “The whole point of Rebirth for all of us is to get back to the essence of the characters.”

EDVS Quote

Geoff Johns speaks on how Green Lantern: Rebirth (2004-2005) lost the feel of what Green Lantern was, and the epic nature of what Green Lantern could be. This is the foundation of what Rebirth is all about. Bringing these characters back to what made them great. And it’s not just Green Lantern’s rebirth that was looked at, but The Flash. “From Showcase to Crisis (on Infinite Earths) to Flashpoint, the Flash has always been at the forefront for change for us in the DC Universe,” Geoff Johns asserted.  The Flash will again be leading the way.

From listening to Johns speak, he and all of creative appear to be extremely excited and proud of what they created for us.  Speaking on DC Universe Rebirth #1, the writer states,

“The very first couple of lines in it sum up what this is to me… This is a picture of the world and the narrator, the mysterious narrator says, ‘I love this world, but there’s something missing.'”

No creative teams announced at this time, but on March 25th, DC Comics will introduce us to the new creative teams while attending WonderCon in Los Angeles. You will be able to livestream the announcement on DC’s YouTube channel.

If you have, like me, long boxes of DC Comics, you will be very happy. If you’ve never read a DC comic before, you won’t be too lost,” Johns said. “This is definitely for comic book readers more than it is for casual readers… but that doesn’t mean it’s exclusive of them.

  1. Good report. I am very interested in anything Geoff Johns does, ever since he rescued Hal Jordan from all the heinous unconscionable changes made to him and made sense of it..

    I was confused with:

“Geoff Johns speaks on how Green Lantern: Rebirth (2004-2005) lost the feel of what Green Lantern was, and the epic nature of what Green Lantern could be.”

    I think you rather meant:

“Geoff Johns speaks on how Green Lantern: Rebirth (2004-2005) *recaptured* the feel of what Green Lantern was, and the epic nature of what Green Lantern could be.”

That was the intent of Rebirth. To reclaim or recapture the original essence of the character.

Otherwise, fine stuff. Appreciated the video too!

    peace
    justice
