Inspired by video game series Dark Souls and the movie Inception, Vessels #1 is the first issue of a dark fantasy comic saga that will take readers on a journey through the mind in a violent, medieval setting.
The creative team consists of Dave Cook, author of critically-acclaimed post apocalyptic comic series Bust, which is also successfully funded on Kickstarter, and Rafael Desquitado Jr, artist of sci-fi epic Constant.
What’s The Story?
Set in the dying world of Cairnthala, a mysterious woman called Wake drifts from place to place in an attempt to evade the Eye-God, a destructive entity older than time itself. Wherever Wake goes, her demonic pursuer follows, laying waste to anything in its path, so Wake has the weight of many deaths on her weary shoulders
So she has chosen a life of exile away from civilization and is close to giving up all hope until she has a fateful run in with a gang of slavers in the wastelands…But when she finds herself taken to the realm’s capital city of Stratum against her will, the race is on to sever the entity’s power before it can kill again.
Wake is swiftly taken captive in the grand city of Stratum where she meets crafty thief Marillon and G’Dala, a young Mind Keeper capable of entering and interpreting dreams to see the future. Together, the trio formulate a plan to slay the Eye-God and introduce a new age of light to the realm
Vessels: Issue #1
The story arc follows our three as they progress on their epic journey, but standing between them are the Vessels, five other-worldly warriors derived from each of the five senses, who have sworn to protect their god at all costs.
The Vessels, have sworn to protect their god at all costs and are hell bent on stopping Wake from slaying their master. Their arrival causes strange, dream-like anomalies to tear the world apart, followed by the appearance of modern day objects that fall into the world.
In short: it’s weird, fun and very different to typical superhero tales. Each of these warriors are the living embodiment of our senses, and as such, take many traits from them. For example, the Vessel ‘Sight’ is a fierce knight who wears a helmet without eye holes, because she can simply see everything at once.
The comic is planned as a multi-part series, which takes place in a dark fantasy world on the brink of death. Readers will witness the final days of the once-proud realm of Cairnthala as it splinters and merges with another plane of existence.
Card Shark Comics founder Dave Cook said of the first issue;
“I’m a huge fan of Dark Souls and that series’ concept of repeating cycles, along with the struggle between light and dark. Vessels takes those base concepts and injects mind-bending set pieces and characters that are often warped, grotesque and just plain weird.”
“I think anyone who likes genre mash-ups will appreciate the ‘odd’ factor of our first issue. It’ll keep readers guessing as to exactly what is happening to Cairnthala, without being all up in itself like Lost – sorry Lost <3”
“We’d love for anyone who likes the sound of Vessels to check out our Kickstarter campaign and consider backing us. This is my third comic campaign as creator – the last two were successful too – so we know what backers want to see before they buy. Expect lots of updates and cool rewards too.”
