PopCultHQ Comic Book Review – Magpie #1 From Aussie Publisher Comicoz

Oi Oi Oi 7_Magpie_sample 1_art by Frantz Kantor_words by Andrez Bergen

Writer Andrez Bergen and artist Frantz Kantor have collaborated for a new series entitled Magpie.  Published by Comicoz, issue #1 is set to debut in the pages of Australian national comic magazine Oi Oi Oi! issue #7 on January 31, 2016.  The 8-page installment has some visually stunning artwork.  The series follows 3D Man, a color blind Australian superhero with poor depth perception, who has become mocked and ridiculed by the residents of the city.  Even the two superhero groups of which he was affiliated had booted him… by mail no less.  As he struggles to regain his glory and confidence, 3D Man realizes he has to take a different approach in order to be respected again.  All of this while he seeks to confront the mysterious Magpie.  Here’s just a peek at a couple of pages for you to gain an idea of the story and art you can expect from these talented creators.

More info on Magpie from writer Andrez Bergen:

Magpie is done very much in the spirit of, well, The Spirit – taking on the concept that people like Will Eisner and Tarpé Mills did of telling complete stories and off-beat vignettes, with a sense of humor as much as a nod to noir, over 8-page installments. While an homage to the comics we love from the golden age to contemporary ones, it also carries with it a pastiche/deconstruction of multi-media pop-culture sensibilities, and the odd fracture of the fourth wall.
Along the way, within each tale, there are nods and winks at everything – from Roy Thomas to Ghost in the Shell, M.C. Escher wrestling Russ Manning’s Magnus,Robot Fighter, and on into mass-media current affair programs.

You can subscribe to Oi Oi Oi! and receive four issues of their comic anthology magazine.  Plus you’ll receive a FREE nostalgia issue!
