The rumors were rampant yesterday when media outlets around the world speculated on news that a Watchmen TV series was in the works. Today HBO confirms it has indeed met with director Zack Snyder about a potential television series based on “Watchmen” the ground breaking 1986 DC Comics miniseries created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.
“Preliminary discussions regarding ‘Watchmen’ have occurred,” the cable network said in a statement to Deadline, “but we have no additional information and no deals are in place,”
The Deadline source suggests that an initial conversation took place “months ago,” but that there are no current talks at the moment with HBO and Zack Snyder. It would be another monumental task for the director who is already vastly occupied with WBs.’ upcoming DC movies, including “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League.”
Snyder helmed the 2009 feature adaptation of “Watchmen,” which received mixed reviews and grossed $185.3 million worldwide. I personally call Watchmen the best graphic novel adaptation to film ever made.
The story of vastly complicated superheroes that deal with situations that real people deal with but never depicted in a comic book story until Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons tale was published. Watchmen the movie by Zack Snyder brilliantly captured the emotion and soil of the story even with major changes to the ending from the source material. For me Zack Snyder added even more to the tale of the Minutemen the original Watchmen as well as expanding more on emotional aspects of the series. If you have not watched the extended directors cut of Watchmen (that’s 3 hours long) you are missing another half of the movie that is more devoted to the comic book series. What Snyder could do with a Watchmen series seems very titillating to me, I hope a HBO series does come to fruition, it would be outstanding!
