In typical Disney fashion, if you have a cash cow, then you need to milk it dry. So it comes as no surprise that rumors are circulating about a Maleficent sequel, only they don’t seem to be rumors any more as IMDB has a listing for Maleficent 2.
It seems that the House of Mouse is in talks with screenwriter Linda Woolverton to come up with a sequel script. The possibilities for a sequel are wide open as they have already covered the story of Sleeping Beauty, now it’s a matter of what happened afterward.
IMDB shows that Joe Roth has already been lined up as a producer, so this script is already in the works.
And what would Maleficent be without the one who truly made the lead character stand out? Angelina Jolie isn’t usually one for sequels, but she hasn’t ruled out the possibility. According to EntertainThis they asked her about a sequel when the original movie came out, “Possibly,” she told us. “I don’t know. I enjoyed it. I just feel like we did this one thoroughly and I don’t think there’d be another. I feel like this is the one, if I was going to ever do a Disney one, this is the one I wanted to do. And I think we’ve done it well.”
And Hollywood Reporter coverage of a Chinese press conference has her saying “It’s kind of hard to top her, she was pretty fun. Maybe I’ll get the chance to play her again.”
So it looks like the possibility of her return is out there. The possibility of her return is further reinforced by the fact that the IMDB listing already has her cast as the title character, however they have put ‘rumored’ after her name so obviously no contracts have been signed.
We know that Disney will be having a sequel in one form or another for Maleficent, whether the script will be worthy of Jolie’s reappearance is another matter. All we can do is sit back and wait.
