A major announcement was made by Marvel.com today. After an extensive search for a director and lead to play the titular protagonist, the reboot of Spider-Man appears set to move forward. Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have finally chosen whom they feel is best to portray the popular web-slinger in Tom Holland.
For those unfamiliar with the 19-year-old’s credentials, the British actor/dancer has won acclaim for his role in the stage production of Billy Elliot the Musical in 2008-2010, has received multiple awards for his acting in 2012’s The Impossible, and has three films due to be released later this year. Producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal worked steadfastly with Sony and Marvel in selecting their new hero, as well as opting for a director. Tom Rothman, who is the Chairman for Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group, had this to say on today’s announcement…
“It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job. The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding. I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception. I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”

The execs and producers saw talent that surpassed the rest of the tryouts. They were impressed not only with his film performances, but primarily his incredibly complex screen tests. Producer Amy Pascal noted,
“Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world. With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
The process was just as intense in selecting a director. After multiple rounds of testing, the easy choice was with Jon Watts (Eugene!, Clown, Cop Car). In choosing Watts, Feige remarked,
“As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life. We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”
The Spider-Man films are Sony Pictures highest-grossing franchise reaching over $4 billion in revenue worldwide. Producers Kevin Feige (teamed with experts at Marvel) and Amy Pascal (who helped launch the original installment in 2002) are passionate about the new direction that is being created for this relaunch. The Spider-Man reboot (no official title has yet been announced) will hit in IMAX and 3D on July 28, 2017.
