Actor Tom Hardy was slated to be a cast member of the upcoming Suicide Squad movie.  At the last moment, Hardy backed out of the film.  Many speculated as to the reasons for Hardy’s departure, but we now have word from the actor himself on the details of his decision.  He was scheduled to play the group’s leader Rick Flag.  That role has now been filled by Joel Kinnaman.  Rick Flag actually isn’t a super-villain like the rest of the team, working in hopes of clemency for their prison sentences.  He is actually a military officer put in control of the team to assure their compliance and to oversee the members to ensure they don’t get out of hand.

Tom Hardy is currently filming The Revenant, a western thriller co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio.  The shooting has gone three months over its projected forecast and has caused problems for Hardy in securing other projects.  That combined with all his promotional work for Mad Max: Fury Road made it impossible for Hardy to devote any time to the Suicide Squad project.  Speaking to Collider, the actor expressed disappointment in having to leave the cast…

“Warner Bros. is my home studio and I love them so I was really bummed out. I wanted to work on that and I know the script is really f***ing alley and I also know what’s gonna happen with The Joker and Harley Quinn in that; I won’t give away too much…it’s f***ing alley. And that whole territory is something that I would certainly—I mean, everybody loves The Joker. Everybody loves The Joker. Will Smith is a dope guy, but everybody loves The Joker and that’s gonna, I think, be a very important film for fans.”

Suicide Squad will hit theaters August 5, 2016.
