It has taken four years but Captain Jack Harkness and Torchwood are finally returning.
Torchwood is a Doctor Who spin-off that was conceived by Russel T. Davies and hit our TVs in 2006. For those not in the know, Torchwood is a secret organization that investigates alien disturbances, oftentimes saving Cardiff, England or the world.
Torchwood: The Conspiracy will be released as a six-part audio series with the first one set to be released in September 2015 by Big Finish. Unfortunately you then need to wait until January 2016 for the second episode and each episode will be released monthly after that.
Each episode will focus on different team members as they explore a particular event. The first episode will feature John Barrowman as Captain Jack. We don’t know yet what this event is, but you can be guaranteed it will feature aliens. We also know that it was penned by David Llewellyn and has been touted as ‘a deadly thriller.’
Executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery stated, “It’s fantastic that we will be bringing Captain Jack back to life with Big Finish. There are many new Torchwood tales to be told and I can’t wait for Jack and his team to defend the Earth once again. I am very grateful for the continuing faith that both the BBC and Russell T Davies have shown in us and very excited to enter into a new world for Big Finish.”
Nicholas Briggs, the executive producer has wanted to do Torchwood for a while and this is his opportunity, “Torchwood is something we’ve wanted to do for ages. It has great characters and there are many stories to be told. Our mission is to bring a whole new series of dramatic adventures to life. We’re starting off with these more intimate, focused releases and will then move on to bigger casts and even wider scope. We’re very much looking forward to working with all the cast and it’s been such a pleasure liaising with Russell T Davies about this. He couldn’t have been more supportive and helpful. Our Torchwood producer, James Goss, has really hit the ground running and his tangible enthusiasm is already proving rather an inspiration to us.”
Big Finish has successfully produced audio dramas and books for a variety of genres including Doctor Who, Dark Shadows, and AD 2000. Their work is phenomenal and I personally look forward to listening to the latest installment of Torchwood.
So far there isn’t much listed on the upcoming series but cast members listed include John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, John Sessions as Wilson, Sarah Ovens as Kate, and Dan Bottomley playing Sam. Additional cast members are to be revealed at a later date, but I am hoping that we might see, or actually hear, a few of the originals.
The big questions still remain.
The Cardiff base was blown up and many of the original team were killed so where will this be based out of?
Are they going to base this series before the Cardiff base was destroyed?
Captain Jack has been around for centuries so are they going to perhaps even base it in the past or future?
If they keep it current, will we see (hear) a return of Martha Jones?
Are they going to explore Jack’s past?
Also the fact that Big Finish is behind the current Classic Doctor Who audio series, does that mean there may be a crossover in the future?
Many of us are disappointed that they won’t be returning to TV, but an audio production may be better as it gives them a wider spectrum to work with and we don’t have the issue of aging actors. After all it is hard to play an ageless character when time continues to advance for you.
What are your thoughts on the new audio series? I would love to hear them.
