Want the Scoop on the Suicide Squad? Here’s What We Know of the Film and Comic Book Series #SuicideSquad #DCComics

I would like to take this opportunity to give you the lowdown on the Suicide Squad, from their formation in DC Comics to the upcoming film by director David Ayer, which is currently in production.

Suicide Squad first premiered in 1959 under the Brave and the Bold title.  In issue #25, we meet the members of this elite group.  Soldier and government agent Rick Flag Jr., physicist Jess Bright, flight medic Karin Grace, and astronomer Dr. Hugh Evans comprised the team.  They were formed to fight menaces in place of the Justice League of America, whose members at that time were retiring.

Most will consider the 1987-1992 series (which ran 66 issues) the true Suicide Squad with their mission cemented in comic lore through various iterations of the team.  This version had the team assembled by Amanda Waller.  They were incarcerated criminals that the government used to pull off covert operations in exchange for reduced jail time.  If they succeeded, they would receive clemency.  C’mon, what super villain wouldn’t love to get some time shaved off their sentence?  If they failed a mission, no change to their stay in prison.  Rick Flag Jr., from the original team, leads this cast of misfits from Belle Reve Penitentiary.  Joining him were Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Nightshade, Bronze Tiger, Enchantress, King Faraday, Multiplex, Virtuoso and Count Vertigo.

The upcoming David Ayer film of the black op team appears to utilize the fourth volume of the series from the New 52 releases.  This group includes Harley Quinn, Deadshot, King Shark, El Diablo, Black Spider, and Voltaic.  Later in the series the team has a different look to it with new members Black Hand, Parasite, Cheetah, Poison Ivy, Reverse Flash, and an unamed Talon.

The storyline for the film is found in the following synopsis, courtesy of IMDB.com:

“A secret government agency run by Amanda Waller, named A.R.G.U.S creates a task force comprised of super villains, the “Suicide Squad”. They are assigned to execute dangerous tasks in exchange for shorter prison sentences.”

The most recent news to come from principle shooting is Ben Affleck (Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice) arrived in Toronto and visited the set.  Though yet unconfirmed, it does appear that the caped crusader will be featured in some manner in the film.
